Establishing a Business Career: 5 Tips for Young Adults With Disabilities

If you’re a young adult with a disability, you might struggle to determine the next steps in your career. It can be tough to figure out how to ask for accommodations at your first internship or even decide which companies will be welcoming to someone with your specific needs. From Beautifully Mystic, here’s why a career in business opens up exciting paths for young adults with disabilities.

Create a LinkedIn Profile

No matter which direction you want to take your career, establishing a LinkedIn profile is a must. In the business world, using LinkedIn is one of the easiest ways to make valuable professional connections today. As you set up your profile, you’ll want to add a clear, professional photo. You should fill out all of the relevant profile sections to include your academic, career, and volunteer experiences. When you share posts, keep your tone positive! Make sure to respond to any inquiries from recruiters and hiring managers promptly.

Choose the Right Degree Program

A degree that includes business courses paves the way for lots of exciting career possibilities! But which degrees will set you up for the highest salary potential? You may want to pursue a degree in corporate accounting and finance, operations and information management systems, actuarial mathematics, quantitative business analysis, or applied economics and management. If you would like to enjoy a broader course of study and keep your career options open, you may want to earn a degree in business.

Land Your First Internship

No matter which subject you choose to study, you can make inroads in the workforce by landing your first internship. But how can you find a truly inclusive employer? Monster recommends looking for large employers that specifically include disability recruitment as part of their broader diversity, equity, and inclusion strategies. You may also want to contact your university’s disability services office - they may be able to recommend companies that have hired graduates with disabilities previously.

Getting Accommodations at Work

You’ve been offered an internship, and you’re ready to start gaining experience in your field! But you’re nervous about getting the accommodations you need at work. Remember, you are entitled to reasonable accommodations in order to perform your role, so you do not have to hesitate to ask. BioSpace recommends having this conversation before you officially start working so that your employer has time to prepare, and putting all of your requests in writing, which will allow all parties involved to access the documents at any time.

Apply for Your First Jobs

Completing at least one internship will give you a sense of what you can expect in the workplace and what specific forms of support you will need from your future employer. If you enjoyed your internship experience, you may want to get in touch with your supervisor and ask if there are any upcoming job openings that you could apply for.

It’s also a good idea to explore a business’s hiring page. You can get a sense of what opportunities are currently available, as well as where opportunities may appear in the future.

Regardless of where you work in the future, you could benefit from finding an employer who allows you to work remotely. Many people with disabilities find that having the option to telecommute makes it easier to manage their workloads while meeting their own needs. Working from the comfort of your own home can be a huge bonus!

Going Your Own Way

After your internship, you may find that working for someone else doesn’t interest you. If you’d rather own your own business, getting started is easier than you may realize. An online formation company can help you get your LLC filed in New Jersey. They make it easy for you to get your legal paperwork taken care of so you can focus on building your business.

Young adults with disabilities often face barriers to full participation in the workforce. It can be harder to find supportive employers and determine which career path will allow you to thrive. With these tips, you’ll be able to start networking on LinkedIn, find your first internship, and get the accommodations you need in the workplace.
