I decided to make an infographic about the 7 chakras of the body and which imbalances can occur if a chakra has a blockage.
The infographic includes:
- The name of each chakra (below the infographic I have included each Sanskrit name too)
- How each chakra relates to certain emotions
- Physical symptoms someone may experience if they have a blocked chakra
If you are curious to learn more or would like a guide as you perform your reiki sessions, I invite you to use this blog post to assist you.
What is a Chakra?
The concept of the chakra system first originated in India dating as far back as 1500 BC. A chakra is an energy point (or center) within your body. Each chakra is directly related to different functions throughout the body - spiritually, emotionally, psychologically, and physically.
The chakras start from the bottom of your tailbone (root chakra) and travel to the top of your head (crown chakra). Each chakra is related to a certain element. And when certain elements are off, then your chakras and physical body can be thrown out of balance.
The Seven Chakras of the Body include:
The Crown Chakra - Sahasrara
Element: Thought
This chakra is related to gratitude, appreciation, and connection with nature. Located at the top of your head, the crown chakra influences all of the other energy centers throughout your body.
If your crown chakra is blocked, you may have problems that resemble some of the other 6 chakra points because it influences those other energy points.
The Third Eye Chakra - Anja
Element: Light
Your third eye chakra is located on your forehead at the point between your eyebrows. This energy center is responsible for intuition and imagination.
If your third eye chakra is blocked, you may experience trouble with your hearing, vision problems, or headaches. I personally used to experience headaches quite often, but when I began meditating and conducting reiki on myself, it made a world of difference. My headaches have since subsided, and I am feeling MUCH better.
The Throat Chakra - Vissudha
Element: Space
The throat chakra is related to communication. This energy center is located in your neck region. If you experience voice problems or laryngitis, any sort of mouth problems, jaw pain, or grinding of teeth then you may have a throat chakra blockage.
The Heart Chakra - Anahata
Element: Air
The heart chakra is related to our levels of love and compassion. This chakra can show signs of imbalance by presenting has neck or shoulder tension, tightness, or pain. You may even notice pain in your upper back or chest, heart problems, asthma, or weight problems.
The Solar Plexus Chakra - Manipura
Element: Fire
Your solar plexus chakra is located at the point just below your ribcage. This chakra is related to self-esteem and confidence. Imbalances within this energy point can present themselves as digestive problems, eating disorders, ulcers, indigestion, heartburn, or abdominal pain.
The Sacral Chakra - Svadisthana
Element: Water
Your sexuality, pleasure, and creativity are all related to your sacral chakra. This energy point is located in your lower abdomen. A blockage within your sacral chakra can look like pain or stiffness in your lower back or hips, sexual or reproductive problems, UTIs, or inability to be creative (like writer's block, etc.)
The Root Chakra - Muladhara
Element: Earth
Your root chakra is the energy point centered between your hips. It is quite literally the 'root' of your being, related to physical identity, stability, and grounding. An imbalance within this chakra can present as arthritis, pain or stiffness in your legs and feet, constipation, or bladder-related issues.
Do any of these ailments sound like something you are experiencing at this present time? Let me know in the comments.
How Do I Unblock a Chakra?
There are many ways to rebalance a chakra:
- Reiki - Reiki therapy can help with unblocking and rebalancing your chakras and keeping them balanced with regular maintenance. If you would like to book a reiki therapy session, I offer a variety of services.
- Meditation - Regular meditation can help relax the body and bring it into a better state of healing. It can clear your mind and free you of stressors that may be causing you imbalance.
- Mantras - mantras are sounds, sayings, or phrases used in meditation used to change your state of mind in a positive manner. For centuries, mantras have helped people focus on improving their mindset and changing their lives for the better. By changing our way of thinking, we shift our perspective. This, in turn, allows us to open new avenues for ourselves and ultimately leads us to achieve our goals.
- Yoga/Asanas - Routine yoga/asana practice can assist our body with quickly getting into that state of relaxation. This gives us the opportunity to recenter and heal ourselves thoroughly and efficiently.
- Ayurveda - this practice is a holistic method to help rebalance your hormones and other systems within your body. Dr. Scott Gerson has a great article on the principles behind Ayurveda and its relationship with the chakra system.
Where Do I Start?
Do what feels best for you. If you want to start small, the mantras can be a good option. Pick one or two to start with, and say them to yourself first thing in the morning and/or right before bed. Practice this for one month to make a habit out of it. Track your progress to see how your feel both physically and emotionally. You can even pair your mantras with a meditation session. The repetition of the saying and the sounds can have a really beneficial effect on your well-being and mindset.
Yoga and Reiki are other great ways to start rebalancing your chakras. If you are new to yoga, I would recommend focusing on a beginner class to help you learn the basic yoga poses. This will allow your body to get used to each position.
If you are new to Reiki, I would recommend at least one full-length therapy session per week for the first month or two. This will allow your body to get used to its natural healing ability and will also get it used to the flow of the reiki energy. From there, you can have reiki sessions more or less frequently as you see fit.
Ayurveda is a great option but can be a bit of an adjustment as it is a dietary option. If you feel you are ready to shift your eating habits, this can be a good option for you. Be sure to consult a certified professional to help you on your ayurvedic journey.
